Know Your Customer

While you’re developing your products to hopefully sell to a particular person, you need to keep in mind that you don’t need to sell to everyone. The item you developed is trying to help a specific individual that is having a problem or wants an easier solution to an action that he or she is currently performing.
Our problem today with marketing something on the internet is that we tend to fall back to what we are familiar with. Television has been with the majority of you since the day you were born. Advertisements on that medium send blasts out to everyone that is watching hoping to cast a wide net to convince those that want or need their product to react. The problem with this method is that it’s very costly and can have a negative effect if it is something that is viewed as an agitation.
Targeting has been used effectively from the early days of television when soap detergent ads were run through a series of day time dramas. These dramas were day to day activities of individuals that all seemed to have problems and were shared with millions of housewives. They became known as “soap operas” simple by the advertising. The problem with the targeting is that it painted individuals into a certain type and as the industry and nation matured it took the “soaps” a while to understand their audience. Today, those daily drams have decreased dramatically and of those still running now have an entirely different demographic than when they were first started.
Targeting of products still happens on television, where most beer commercials run through sporting events. Jewelry commercials are found on women specific programming such as “say yes to the dress” and of course food products are featured on the Food Network.
Now with internet marketing you have the ability to be very specific to those individuals that need to want your product. You can target utilizing social media down to countries that people are from, the language they speak, their age, gender, religious beliefs, and just about to the topic of your product. This results in huge savings since you only pay for those that click on the link to your item. So what this means is that you need to understand the customer you’re trying to entice into purchasing. In order to be successful at this, you should take some time to research them and find out as much about them as you can.
